THE CHALLENGE

Managing safety and zone compliance across a student hostel facility with separate boys and girls wards is a continuous and largely thankless task for wardens. Manual rounds cannot cover all zones simultaneously - and between rounds, the facility operates largely on trust. Wrong gender entries, unknown visitors, blacklisted students, and curfew violations happened without any reliable detection mechanism in place.

Night hours presented the highest risk. Students in the wrong ward, unauthorised overnight guests, and curfew violations were all invisible to wardens until a complaint was raised or a physical check happened to catch someone. By that point the violation had already occurred - sometimes repeatedly over many nights.
  • Wrong gender zone entry undetected

No mechanism to flag boys entering girls ward or vice versa in real time.

  • Blacklisted students attempting re-entry

Expelled or blacklisted students could attempt facility entry with no automated flagging at any entry point.

  • Unknown visitors entering without authorisation

Outsiders entering the facility went undetected without face recognition at entry and common area cameras.

  • Curfew violations and undetected exits

Students sneaking out after curfew and re-entering later had no detection mechanism at any point in the process.

  • Unauthorised overnight guests

Unknown persons remaining in the facility overnight had no detection layer after initial entry.

  • Students in wrong ward during night hours

No visibility into whether students were in their assigned ward during night hours without physical room checks.

THE SOLUTION

We deployed a face recognition system across the full hostel facility - entry gates, ward entry points, corridors, and common areas. Every person moving through the facility is matched against an enrolled database of students, staff, and approved visitors. Zone rules are enforced per person per time window - with night hour restrictions automatically active. Any violation triggers an instant alert to the warden and security team.
Flow: Person detected on any camera -> Face matched against enrolled database -> Zone and time window rules checked -> Violation flagged if rule breached -> Warden and security alerted instantly -> Incident logged with image and timestamp

WHAT CHANGED AFTER

Wrong gender zone entry detected and flagged in real time - no reliance on complaint or chance discovery.

Blacklisted student re-entry attempts flagged instantly - zero tolerance enforced automatically at every entry point.

Curfew and night hour violations alerted to warden immediately - unknown overnight guests detected and flagged.

Complete movement log for every student across every shift - full audit trail available for incident investigation and warden review.
