THE CHALLENGE

Workers operating at height near material handling zones were required to wear safety harnesses at all times. The facility had existing CCTV coverage but no intelligence layer - cameras recorded footage but could not identify or flag harness violations in real time. Violations were only discovered during retrospective footage review, long after the exposure had occurred.
The two core violation types presented different risks. Workers entering height zones without a harness represented an immediate safety gap at the point of entry. Workers removing harnesses mid-operation - while already at height near heavy glass and building materials - represented an even higher risk scenario with no detection mechanism in place.
  • Basic CCTV with no detection capability

Existing cameras recorded but could not identify or flag harness violations in real time.

  • Mid-operation harness removal undetected

Workers removing harnesses while already at height had no detection or deterrent in place.

  • No immediate on-site response

Without automated alerting, violations went unaddressed until a supervisor happened to be present.

  • Height zone and material area complexity

Varied camera angles, reflective glass surfaces, and worker movement made accurate harness detection challenging.

THE SOLUTION

We deployed a computer vision system on the existing CCTV infrastructure across all height work zones and material handling areas. The system continuously monitors for harness compliance - detecting both missing harnesses at entry and mid-operation removal. On detection, an instant alert is sent to the safety supervisor and an on-site speaker announces a voice alert - creating an immediate deterrent and response without requiring supervisor presence.
Flow: Live camera feed -> Harness compliance checked -> Violation detected -> Instant alert to supervisor -> On-site voice announcement triggered -> Incident logged with image and timestamp

WHAT CHANGED AFTER

Harness violations detected in real time for the first time - CCTV footage now has an active intelligence layer.

Mid-operation removal now immediately flagged - Highest risk violation type no longer goes undetected.

On-site voice alert creates instant deterrent - Workers self-correct before supervisor intervention required.

Full compliance audit trail maintained - Every violation logged with image and timestamp for safety audits.
